BACK ON TRACK

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

I ran my first race of 2009 this past Sunday at the Indianapolis Speedrome.

While this race wasn't for points, it was still fun to get back in the car and get back to racing!

This race was put on by the Rumble Series so I was running against some national midgets which have about twice as much power as my Kenyon Car does.  That sounds like a big mismatch but on small tracks the K-Cars can be competitive.  Believe me, I'd still rather have the extra horsepower but it's not the huge disadvantage you'd think it would be for having half the power.

We started off with two practice sessions.  I had never been to the Speedrome before Sunday so I was pretty unfamiliar with the track itself.  However once I got out there, I found my line pretty quickly and felt like I was keeping up with most of the big-motor guys.  So we were pleased after the two sessions.

I started third in my heat race.  On the start, they threw the green when there was a car trying to go in between the front row.  I backed up because this guy was literally trying to drive in between the front two cars and they still threw the green.  I was not expecting them to wave it with such a bad formation, but they did and I fell back a few spots.  However, my friend Kyle Hamilton was in the race and he was the car that I had fallen in behind.  He was fast so I let him do the majority of the dirty work by passing the cars and I just stayed on his bumper and went past those cars with him.  Then, he took off towards the front and left me to do my own business.  I passed a car on my own and wound up back where I started, in third place.  Again my team and I were pretty pleased with our results.

In the 25-car feature I started ninth, just missing the invert which would have put us on the pole.  The car felt good early and I was running 10th when I cut the corner a bit too tight and bounced off the gigantic rumble- strips.  I believe it damaged my car a little bit because it would not turn nearly as smoothly after that.  About half-way through the race, I banged wheels with another car.  His right rear bounced over my left front and we both spun.  I restarted at the tail and passed a few other cars to get back to 12th, but I could tell we'd done some damage with the contact.  Even though the car didn't feel right I thought I could get at least the two ahead of me, but as I came off of turn two something broke in the front end.  Fortunately I got the car stopped before it made wall contact.

It wasn't how I wanted to end my night, for sure, but all in all I was pleased with how we ran.  I felt like I adapted to the track very quickly and I felt good that I was able to pass some of those with midget-engine power.  Most importantly, it served the purpose of knocking off the rust before opening the Kenyon Series schedule.

Our first Kenyon Series points race is this Friday, May 8th at Anderson Speedway.   Practice begins at 5:30 and qualifying is slated for 6:30.  Heat races will begin after that with the feature to follow.

Thanks for checking in with me and I hope to see everyone at the track soon!

BACK FROM VACATION, READY FOR RACIN'

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

Hello everyone!

I just got back from spring break!  Our family went down to a resort just south of St. Pete.  It was great to get away for a while, and of course to be on the beach!  I really didn't do much other than get some sun, read a couple books, and relax.  I did go on a jet ski adventure which was a blast.  I drove one ski while my dad and sister rode on another, and the guide led the way on a third.  It was a 2 1/2 hour ride with some of it in the bay and some of it on one of the local rivers in Ruskin, Florida.  There were times when we had the skis wide open, and there were times when you had to creep through because the river was so narrow.  It was very "backwoods" and we saw some cool wildlife, including some gators!  Most of them were smaller in size, about five-footers, but

BACK IN THE CAR, FINALLY!

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

Racing season has begun!

I tested at Anderson Speedway on Saturday and felt like I have already improved from last year.  Mel and Don Kenyon set up the car and, as always, it was perfect (even on old tires!).  It was great to get back in the car and to press that "Start" button to fire up the engine once again.  It was also nice that the weather cooperated with us, and I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day than what was given to us on Saturday.

So, that's it for now.  I have another test scheduled for this coming Friday once again at Anderson and the weekend after that, April 5th, is our first race of the season!  WHOOOO!  I'm really excited and looking forward to another great year of racing!

I'll make sure to write about our results of Friday's test, but that's all for now!

BACK FROM DAYTONA

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

Hello again!

I spent last weekend at Daytona and it was great!  My grandpa and I flew down to Daytona on Friday and spent all weekend at the World Center of Speed.  We witnessed some incredible racing and it was awesome to watch 43 of NASCAR's best come flying by you, nose-to-tail at almost 190mph.

The Nationwide race was on Saturday.  My dad had been in Daytona for a week because he had to work this race in the pits for ESPN so it was just my grandpa and me on Saturday.  We sat in a suite, and I know there was absolutely no seat that could've been better than the ones we had.  Thanks to ESPN's Michelle Baker for hooking us up!  The race was a dogfight right down to the last corner, with Tony Stewart ultimately coming out on top.

Also on Saturday, my grandpa and I went to the Daytona 500

RACING SEASON IS ALMOST HERE

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

Hey everyone!   I've got some new updates here on the website so make sure and check them out.

The 2009 USAC Kenyon Midget schedule was released this past week and it is on the "schedule" page...duh.

I also have posted a lot of cool photos from a friend's muscle car collection.  His name is Steve Cage, and his collection is unbelievable.  I've got a ton of pics on the "photos" page so check them out...and also visit their website at www.rpmcollection.com for even more cool stuff.

In a couple weeks I'm going to the Daytona 500 so I'll put up some pictures from that trip too.  This is a dream come true for me and I'm very excited about it.  I'm going down there on that Friday afternoon so I'm not sure about  seeing the Camping World Truck Series race Friday night, but I'm definitely

JUST CHECKING IN

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

Hey everyone!   I hope the new year is off to a great start for you.  While I enjoyed the "holiday season", I am anxiously awaiting the "racing season"!  I haven't been in the car since October, and it's driving me crazy.  There isn't even racing to watch on TV.  Once NASCAR starts in a few weeks, I'll get my fix and it'll be all good.

I've been spending my time working out and playing my guitar.  I play the bass guitar, and have been playing pretty regularly in our church band.  I also made the jazz band at school so I'm getting in a lot of guitar playing.   I'm still taking lessons each week too from Jon E. Gee who is the bass guitar player for John Mellencamp.  Very cool.

In racing, the off-season is a time to regroup and get ready for the season ahead.  Sponsorship is always a huge

HONORED TO BE HONORED

The 2008 DK Promotions banquet was held last night for the USAC Kenyon Midgets, Ford Focus, and Regional Midgets.  I enjoyed seeing everyone again and took home some nice hardware.

My dad and I each got fourth place trophies, an improvement from 10th place a year ago.  Dad's trophy was for owner points and mine for driver points.  We also each got a check which was nice.

I was also awarded the "2008 Kenyon Midget Most Improved Driver" trophy. I definitely felt like I had improved this year, and what's amazing is that I felt like we were actually better than our results indicated.  It made me feel good that my improvement was recognized by others.

The biggest surprise of the night for me was being named winner of the inagural "P.A.S.S." award.   This award was presented by George and

BREAK TIME

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

It is officially offseason for me now and while I'm not racing again until possibly December, I still have plenty to do.   I am writing from my grandparents house because I'm on Fall Break!  Unfortunately, it is raining right now so I probably won't get to ride 4-wheelers today like I had planned, but yesterday was a great day so I got lots of riding in.  I also tore down the 4-wheeler with my grandpa because it wasn't starting, and then I put it back together all by myself, which was fun.

I have also been playing bass guitar in the church band and I am really enjoying it.  It's been a unique experience playing in front of an audience.

Also, I am honored to say that my old quarter-midget club, Mini Indy, is inducting me into their Hall of Fame this year, so I'll be attending their

THE SEASON'S OVER--BUMMER!

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

Unfortunately, the offseason has begun! The Kenyon cars ran for the final time of 2008 this past weekend at Anderson Speedway.    I qualified second fastest, just three-hundredths behind Jeff Wimmenauer.  I finished 3rd in my Heat race, but the car felt good so I was encouraged about our chances in the Feature.   For the Feature, due to the 6-car invert, our team was handed a 5th place starting position which is not a good spot for a track like Anderson  where it is very difficult to pass.  That's one thing that I think USAC should reconsider for next year.  Because our cars are so similar, passing is very difficult, which almost makes it punishment to qualify fast and have to start so deep in the field.   If we're going to do qualifying, there should be some reward for being fast.

ANDERSON + MOTO GP = FUN WKEND

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

I had a great weekend with a cool combination of racing.  First, it was my race Saturday night, and then I went to the Moto GP on Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

We ran our second-to-last race at Anderson on Saturday night, along with the USAC National midgets.    I qualified fast time, at a 12.629.  My car was pushing on the bottom of the track in practice and qualifying, so I adjusted my line and it paid off.  Mel decided to put a new right front tire on for the feature, just to help that push a little bit.  The car was absolutely incredible.  I started fourth in the feature and moved up to second after a first lap yellow.  Trying to pass for the lead on the re-start I scraped the wall on the backstretch.  Fortunately, the car was not damaged but I lost about 3 spots.
