SNAGGED ANOTHER WIN AT ANDERSON

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

Anderson has been a good track for me this year.  I won there Friday night for the second time.  So that's two wins and a runner-up there in three races.

It's weird how things work out sometimes.  It was a crazy day when nothing seemed to be going right.  After being parked on I-69 for 30 minutes due to an accident, my dad was stepping on it to make it to Anderson by 5 o'clock for the drivers meeting.  However once we got within a mile of the track and approached a railroad crossing we were stopped once again for a train that was parked right in the middle of the intersection for 15-20 more minutes.  Now, I was really freaking out but we called Don Kenyon and fortunately we weren't the only ones caught up by traffic.  The drivers meeting had been pushed back to 5:30

STRANGE NIGHT ENDS RIGHT

Posted by dillon in news

In the end all was right, although the night certainly didn't start that way.

When Dillon Welch and his dad headed for Anderson Speedway late Friday afternoon they soon began to wonder if they should have just stayed home. First, there was a massive traffic jam on I-69 due to an accident.  The standstill put Dillon in danger of missing the 5pm driver's meeting.  Other race teams were caught up in the traffic too so the driver's meeting was eventually pushed back thirty minutes.  That would surely give the Welch's plenty of time to get to the track, except that when they got to within a mile of Anderson Speedway they were caught by a train; a train that was stopped and moving nowhere, for twenty minutes.  Finally the train moved and Dillon arrived at the racetrack with about ten minutes to spare.  Dillon promptly went to the officials tent to draw his qualifying number and got a "one" which is the worst number possible, meaning he would be the first qualifier.

At that point Dillon just laughed.  "With everything that had happened, what else would I draw?" he said.

Qualifying turned out to be an adventure too.  In the two lap time-trial, the second lap is almost always faster due to built-up momentum.  However, after posting a 12.66 on the first lap, the Welch Racing car got big loose off turn four of the final lap and it was costly, putting the second lap a tick slower than the first.

"After the first lap, I thought he'd have a chance of getting into the high-40's on the second lap," Dillon's dad Vince said.  "Then to see a 68 on the second lap, I thought we were in trouble."

Instead, the first lap time was one-hundredth of a second quicker than the next fastest qualifier, Dalton Armstrong.  (The top four qualifiers ended up less than three one-hundredths of a second apart.)  As the fastest qualifier, Dillon would start from pole position in the heat race and feature.  That is a significant advantage at Anderson.

mel__me_after_and_win_2_.jpg"Qualifying is huge here," Dillon said after qualifying.  "It's a difficult track to pass on, so if you've got a good car and can get out front, you're tough to beat."

In the heat race, Dillon beat Taylor Ferns to turn one off the green flag and finished the 8-lap prelim by taking the checkered ahead of the field.

In the 30-lap feature, the green flag waved and Dillon and Armstrong battled side-by-side into turn one.

"Dalton had a really good run off the high line out of turn two and he almost got me on the inside going into three," Dillon said.

But the 15 year old Welch kept his Kenyon Midget up top through three and four and denied Armstrong the pass. From there, Dillon consistently hit his marks and pulled away to a comfortable lead.

The only scare came late in the race when Welch and a lapped car nearly came together out of turn two.  There was a collective gasp in the crowd as Dillon swerved to avoid contact.

"That was close," Welch said with a grin afterwards.

It turned out to be the only close call as Welch continued his dominance at Anderson.  In three feature races at the World's Fastest Quarter-Mile, Welch has led all but two laps and brought the trophy home twice.

"Now we've got to get some wins at the other tracks," Welch said in his post-race interview.

He'll get that chance on Wednesday (June 10) when the Kenyon Midget Series invades Plymouth Speedway.

ILLIANA ALL OVER AGAIN

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

I raced at Illiana last night, but even though I finished second I must admit I came away disappointed.

Along with Mt. Lawn, Illiana is probably my favorite track on the Kenyon Midget schedule.  As I elaborated on in the last blog, this race was the one year anniversary of what was officially my first win in the Kenyon.  Illiana is a fun track and the banking in the corners is unique, so it makes for a fun night when you have a good car.

I qualified on the pole which benefited me a lot since Illiana is fairly difficult to pass on.  I messed up the start and finished thrid in the heat race but I felt like I was fast enough to win.  Nonetheless I retained my pole position starting spot for the feature.  Prior to the feature,  my crew chief, Mel Kenyon, and I made a small change to the car

ALMOST, AGAIN

Posted by dillon in news

Despite leading the first 28 laps of the 30 lap feature Wednesday night at Illiana Speedway, Dillon Welch couldn't quite close the deal and finished runner-up.

"I guess that's what they call a character builder," Dillon said while trying to force a grin.  "I'm disappointed, but in the big picture it was a good night."

It was indeed.  Welch was the fastest qualifier for the third time in four races, and also led the most laps in the feature for the third time.  But it was the finish that left him grim.

After fending off Dalton Armstrong's challenges during the first half of the race, Welch had to fight back Grant Galloway in the second half.  Galloway seemed to be a bit faster but Welch held him off lap after lap.  Finally with two to go, Welch's Kenyon Midget floated a bit two high off of

MY RACING & INDY TOO

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

It's been a couple weeks since I've updated my blog...sorry about that.  It's been a busy time since the season got underway.  Yesterday I went to the Indianapolis 500, and it was awesome!  I love that race!  It was a great day with so much color and tradition, and the race was exciting with Helio joining the group of three-time winners at Indy.  I sat in the Penthouse Paddock just past the "yard of bricks", and it was a great view.  I took my friend Eric Chivington with me.  It was his first 500, and he experienced a good one.

After the race, we hung out in the ESPN TV compound with my dad for a little bit and then went up to one of the suites to eat.  The suite is owned by Wayne Hillis who has been very gracious to my family, allowing us to spend time in the suite

READY FOR ILLIANA

Posted by dillon in news

After racing at Anderson Speedway and Mt. Lawn Speedway, the Kenyon Midget Series heads to northern Indiana on Wednesday for its first event of the season at Illiana Speedway.

The race is the fourth of 17 events on the Kenyon Midget schedule.

"I really like Illiana," said series points leader Dillon Welch.  "I had a good run there last year and led for quite awhile before the car tightened up late."

Welch is off to a strong start this season.  The 15 year old racer has been the fast-qualifier in two of the three events, has won heat races at all three, and won the feature in the season opener.

5-8-09_191_600_x_399.jpg"We've been pretty good so far," Welch said.  "But in racing, it can change quickly, so you can't take anything for granted."

The Wednesday race is just one challenge Welch will face

DILLON WINS SEASON OPENER

Posted by dillon in news

Not too many times can you say you had a perfect night at the race track.  Dillon Welch savors the feeling.

The 15 year old racer opened the USAC Kenyon Midget Series by completing the racing trifecta on Friday night at Anderson Speedway.   Welch was the fast qualifier, won his heat race, and completed the sweep by walking away from field in the feature.     group_1_600_x_450.jpg

"The car was perfect all night," Welch said.  "I could put it anywhere I wanted and it was fast."

Welch celebrated afterwards with nearly 20 friends and family who had come to the race.

"It feels great, especially to win with so many people here supporting me."

Even though he was credited with a win last year when a driver failed post-race technical inspection, Dillon considered this his first victory.

FINALLY! A WIN!

Posted by dillon in windillon welch

I won on Friday at Anderson for the first time in the Kenyon Midget series! (Last season I was credited for a win after a driver failed tech but I never considered it a win.)

The day started off with everybody looking to the sky.  It didn't look very promising, but thankfully we got all the racing in without feeling a single rain drop.

Practice went well.  Mel had the car set up just right so I was able to drive it hard.  We set fast time in qualifying and I was two tenths of a second faster than the second quickest car.  USAC changed the rules around this year so that the heat and feature lineups are determined by the qualifying times.  So, since I was "fast time", I would start first in the heat and the feature, which is nice on a track that's tough to pass

SEASON OPENER, TAKE 2

Posted by dillon in news

After the first attempt at the Kenyon Series season opener was rained out last month, the USAC sanctioned series will try again Friday night (May 8) at Anderson Speedway.

Following practice sessions and qualifying, heat races are scheduled to get underway at 7pm.  The Feature races will follow.   The USAC Regional Midgets and Ford Focus Series will also be on the bill at the track dubbed as the "World's Fastest Quarter Mile".

"I can't wait to get the season going," said Dillon Welch.

Welch ran a Rumble Series event Sunday at the Speedrome.  Even though he was in a car with a much smaller engine, he was competitive, running in the top ten before suffering front end damage that eventually ended his night.

"Unless you win, you always feel like it could've been better," Welch said.

BACK ON TRACK

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

I ran my first race of 2009 this past Sunday at the Indianapolis Speedrome.

While this race wasn't for points, it was still fun to get back in the car and get back to racing!

This race was put on by the Rumble Series so I was running against some national midgets which have about twice as much power as my Kenyon Car does.  That sounds like a big mismatch but on small tracks the K-Cars can be competitive.  Believe me, I'd still rather have the extra horsepower but it's not the huge disadvantage you'd think it would be for having half the power.
racing_at_speedrome.jpg
We started off with two practice sessions.  I had never been to the Speedrome before Sunday so I was pretty unfamiliar with the track itself.  However once I got out there, I found my line pretty quickly and felt like I was keeping up with most of the big-motor guys.  So we were pleased after the two sessions.

I started third in my heat race.  On the start, they threw the green when there was a car trying to go in between the front row.  I backed up because this guy was literally trying to drive in between the front two cars and they still threw the green.  I was not expecting them to wave it with such a bad formation, but they did and I fell back a few spots.  However, my friend Kyle Hamilton was in the race and he was the car that I had fallen in behind.  He was fast so I let him do the majority of the dirty work by passing the cars and I just stayed on his bumper and went past those cars with him.  Then, he took off towards the front and left me to do my own business.  I passed a car on my own and wound up back where I started, in third place.  Again my team and I were pretty pleased with our results.

In the 25-car feature I started ninth, just missing the invert which would have put us on the pole.  The car felt good early and I was running 10th when I cut the corner a bit too tight and bounced off the gigantic rumble- strips.  I believe it damaged my car a little bit because it would not turn nearly as smoothly after that.  About half-way through the race, I banged wheels with another car.  His right rear bounced over my left front and we both spun.  I restarted at the tail and passed a few other cars to get back to 12th, but I could tell we'd done some damage with the contact.  Even though the car didn't feel right I thought I could get at least the two ahead of me, but as I came off of turn two something broke in the front end.  Fortunately I got the car stopped before it made wall contact.

It wasn't how I wanted to end my night, for sure, but all in all I was pleased with how we ran.  I felt like I adapted to the track very quickly and I felt good that I was able to pass some of those with midget-engine power.  Most importantly, it served the purpose of knocking off the rust before opening the Kenyon Series schedule.

Our first Kenyon Series points race is this Friday, May 8th at Anderson Speedway.   Practice begins at 5:30 and qualifying is slated for 6:30.  Heat races will begin after that with the feature to follow.

Thanks for checking in with me and I hope to see everyone at the track soon!
